Results of the open ideas competition: Hyperblock – Rethinking Cerda’s Legacy

Students Max Blake, Jochen Schumacher, and Paul Strobel win the open ideas competition: Hyperblock – Rethinking Cerda’s Legacy. The competition project took place in the spring/summer of 2020 semester as a free studio supported by the Chair for Urban Design and Urbanisation.

The competition called for overall ideas regarding the redesign of Cerda blocks, looking at their cultural and urbanist heritage, as part of the city of Barcelona, with visions reflecting on possible social and environmental challenges in the future. The particular focus of the competitions was on pedestrian and vehicle movements in the future and questions of density in the city.

The competition proposal named ProEixampe_4.0 investigated the historical development of Barcelona as a vehicle to project possible futures. The scenario’s specificity addresses certain current policy changes in Barcelona, like the “greenification” movement and Superblock, and the potential for a car-free city in the future.

CUD congratulates the awarded students.
